Orevac® G

Maleic Anhydride (MAH) Grafted PO

Product range

Orevac grafted polyolefins design for:

  • tie layers in multilayer plastic barrier films
  • coupling agent for compounds

Grafted Orevac® properties

The polyolefins are based on polyethylene (PE), ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA), ethylene-methyl acrylate ester copolymer (EMA) or polypropylene (PP). They are grafted with various levels of maleic anhydride in order to control their reactivity. Maleic anhydride is not corrosive, but introduces reactivity in the polymer chain, and can be reactive with hydroxyl (EVOH) and amino groups (polyamides). Orevac resins comprise more than 20 different grades of thermoplastic polymers capable of helping bond a wide variety of substrates together. MAH is not corrosive.

Maleic anhydride provides polarity and reactivity which gives high adhesion levels on various substrates such as: PA, EVOH, PET and aluminium.

Adhesives properties

The level of maleic anhydride has been ajusted in each grade of Orevac® in order to be used in the production of multilayers structures that combine the performances of polyolefin with an oxygen barrier material, like EVOH, a product that is highly prized in the packaging industry. They also develop adhesion to polar materials (metal, epoxy, etc.) and fillers.

The level of maleic anhydride in the Orevac coupling agents has been optimized to be used as coupling agents in PP and HFFR compounds. Orevac® CA100 is the grades used in PP compounds containing fillers such as talc, glass fibers, titanium dioxide, etc.

Rheology / Processability

Through the choice of the right polyolefin base, Orevac® melt index is well-suited to the implementation of multi-layer techniques:

•Co-extrusion of sheets

•Blown films and cast films

•Blow molding of bottles and pipes coating

Flexible packaging

Multilayer blown films and cast films are mainly used in packaging applications.

Multilayer tubes and pipes

Orevac® extrudable adhesives resins are used to provide the most reliable and highest quality bonding of:

  • PE materials towards metals or polar materials for coextruded multilayer barrier and composite pipe applications.
  • Up to 90°C, Orevac® resins gives superior bonding, offering greater reliability and a longer services life for hot water uses.

The structure PEX / Aluminium or EVOH are suitable for floor heating tubes which prevent the oxidation of heating equipment. Specific Orevac® adhesive resins have been designed to reach high adhesion levels between PEX and EVOH or Aluminium and are suitable for the tube extrusion process.

The coextrusion of heating pipes with an Orevac® tie layer and a layer of EVOH makes it possible to reduce the diffusion of oxygen into the heating circuits, thus drastically reducing corrosion. In addition to their excellent adhesion, Orevac® polymers offer suitable heat resistance, providing a long heating tube life.

Recommended Orevac® grades: 18342N, 18410P (powder, produced by Ambra)

Pipe coating

External corrosion protection of steel pipes for natural gas, oil or water transportation.

With more 20 years presence in Pipe Coating market, we have developed many adhesives responding to the highest expectations of the application. With a long experience in grafted polymers, Orevac® new generation of adhesive has been developed by fine tuning maleic anhydride repartition on ethylene or propylene chain.

With the new generation of adhesive, we improve significantly adhesion between epoxy primer and top-coat, especially at higher temperature being able to go up to 100°C / 212°F.

Orevac® adhesive gives higher safety factor versus standard requirements.

Pipe steel coating with 3 layers: epoxy / adhesive / top coat; recommended Orevac® grades: 18341, 18342N, 18732

Adhesion up to 100°C/212°F, peeling with cohesive aspect at all temperatures with Orevac® 18342N.

Engineering plastics modification

The Orevac® resins are a unique range of reactive polymers due the grafting of anhydride groups. These products combine an outstanding the processability and the required reactivity with polyamides. The Orevac® IM grafted polymers meet the need to flexibilize engineering plastics such as polyamides.

New Orevac® Impact Modifier grades for polyamide

Orevac® IM300 and IM800 new grades have been formulated to speed up the manufacturing productivity of these compounds while maintaining excellent impact resistance and mechanical properties.

Orevac® IM300 has been designed to combine an excellent fluidity with high impact resistance at room temperature. Thanks to its high fluidity, it opens up new opportunities in terms of processability of the compounds such as injection molding of small pieces with specific geometries or glass-reinforced PA.

Orevac® IM800 grafted polymer has been designed to achieve excellent impact resistance at low temperature such as -40°C with a very low ductile/brittle transition temperature. It is therefore recommended for specific automotive applications.

Orevac® IM300 and IM800 complete Arkema’s range of reactive polymers with the Lotader® 4700 resin, already used for the modification of polyamides.

PP based compounds

The addition of fillers to PP in order to improve mechanical strength (modulus), thermal properties like HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) and Vicat is very commonly used.

Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene, such as Orevac® PP, are used in the formulation to improve the properties of the PP compounds.

Orevac® CA100 is an efficient coupling agent in filled or reinforced PP compounds to improve:

  • Filler / Matrix interfacial adhesion
  • Overall cohesion of the material
  • Tensile and impact properties of the compounds.

Orevac® 18341 is an efficient coupling agent in filled or reinforced PE compounds.

Wood and natural fiber composites

The Orevac® CA100 shows an appropriate range of properties, like high reactivity, low viscosity, useful as a coupling agent between PP and wood fibers.

Orevac® 18507 has been designed as coupling agent for natural fibers field high density polyethylene.

Main applications of wood polymer composites are decking for outdoor, planks, doors, profiles, windows and picture frames.

PP glass fiber compounds

Orevac® CA100 has a high efficiency as a coupling agent of glass fiber / PP due to:

HFFR compounds

HFFR compound consists of polyolefin matrix (Evatane® or Lotryl® resins), hydrated mineral filler (ATH, MDH) and coupling agent.

Orevac® is used as coupling agent:

The selection of the appropriate coupling agent is a key issue for HFFR compounds:

High levels of flame retardant additives affect the polymer matrix, which leads to low mechanical performance. This can be overcome by introducing Orevac® as a coupling agent between the polyolefin and filler.

Orevac® resins used as coupling agent increase tensile strength and elongation at break.
