Lotader®, Lotader® T

Terpolymer of Ethylene, Acrylic Ester and Maleic Anhydride (MAH) / Glycidyl Methacrylate (GMA)

Product range

Lotader® flexibility, heat stability, processability and adhesion versatility make it an outstanding resin as an impact modifier, coupling agent, compatibilizer, tie layer for adhesion promoter.

Appllications

Packaging

Lotader tie resins have outstanding ability to bond to various substrates such as plain, metallized and printed plastic films, aluminum foil,...

Lotader® adhesives are the preferred tie layers for complex flexible packaging structures made by extrusion coating or extrusion lamination processes.

Lotader® terpolymers enable to combine printed or metallized plastic films as OPA, OPET and BOPP, aluminum foil, cardboard. Grades such as Lotader® 4503 and Lotader® 4613 have outstanding adhesion to unprimed plastic substrates.

Due to its reactivity and outstanding processability, Lotader® terpolymer is a suitable tie layer for the coextrusion of some EVOH and polyamide-based multilayer barrier films, bottles, sheets, containers…

Adhesive performances: LDPE blends / Ready for use grades

Impact modifiers for engineering plastics

Temperature resistant thermoplastics (for example PA, PBT, PET, PPS and PC/PBT alloys) are more and more frequently used in the automotive, electrical and electronic industries. Significant parts of these markets need improved impact resistance.

Ethylene copolymers with high comonomer content and therefore good elastomeric behavior can be successfully used as impact modifiers.

Lotader® MAH grades give excellent performance in modifying PA 6 and PA 6.6 ranging from flexible PA to super-tough PA, while Lotader® GMA grades are the most suitable for the modification of polyesters.

Lotryl® copolymers are frequently combined with Lotader® reactive terpolymers to adjust processability, impact strength and cost.

Lotader® and Lotryl® grades are totally miscible with polyolefins (PO), and therefore are good compatibilizers for PA/PO and polyester/PO blends, as well as PET recycling.

Wire & Cables

Cables used in buildings, automotive and power networks are increasingly required to be Halogen Free Flame Retardant (HFFR).

HFFR compound consists of polyolefin matrix (Evatane® or Lotryl® resins), hydrated mineral filler (ATH, MDH) and coupling agent.

Lotader® is used as coupling agent:

The selection of the appropriate coupling agent is a key issue for HFFR compounds:

High levels of flame-retardant additives affect the polymer matrix, which leads to low mechanical performance. This can be overcome by introducing Lotader® as a coupling agent between the polyolefin and filler.

Lotader® resins using as coupling agent increase the tensile strength and elongation at break.

Lotader® is unmatched to improve air/water ageing and reduce compound viscosity.

Bitumen reactive modification

Bitumen reactive modification with Lotader® AX range

Bitumen modification are more and more applied in hot mix asphalts.

Their use improves the resistance to rutting, fatigue and thermal cracking, and extends the service life of an asphalt pavement.

Lotader® AX gives excellent performance to the modified binder in terms of:

  • Excellent rutting resistance
  • Meet most dynamic properties requirements (PG, MSCRT)

Increase of tensile strength

Increase of elasticity

Decrease of temperature susceptibility

Lotader® AX are easy to process:

  • Easy to process
  • Excellent performance with low effect on viscosity
  • Outstanding bitumen storage stability
  • Efficient at low loading at 1.5 – 2.0%
  • Easy to prepare in most common equipment : no need of high shear tank.

Lotader® AX8840 and Lotader® AX8700, AX8750 and AX8900 can be combined to adjust the softening point.

Recycled plastics / Polymer blends

Lotader® and Lotryl® copolymers are mainly used as impact modifier for polyamide, polyester and polycarbonate matrix. In addition, Lotader® and Lotryl® copolymers offer good compatibilization for polymer blends with improved properties.

The use of blends to improve mechanical properties and the development of recycled polymers in compounds require excellent polymer compatibilization. Functional polyolefins allow homogenizing polymeric components of blends and improving the mechanical properties and the processability.

A main example is the use of Lotader® AX8840 for recycled PET which contains polyolefins like PP or PE. Polyolefins which are not eliminated by the regeneration process or introduced intentionally in order to develop blends with improved properties.

It also provides a good appearance and enhances intrinsic viscosity (IV). Lotader® and Lotryl® copolymers for PET recycling are easy to process.

Thanks to their high polarity and reactivity, Lotader® AX and Lotryl® copolymers are good modifier for polymer blends such as PC/ABS and PC/PBT blends.

Pipeline coating

In the pipeline coating application, Lotader® resins are used in 3-layer PE applications.

The choice of the pipe coating system depends on several factors:

  • choice of end user (type of coating)
  • service temperature of pipeline
  • standards requirements (DIN 30670, NFA, etc.)
  • end user specification requirements

In the pipeline coating application, Lotader® resins are used in 3-layer PE applications :

Tape or sleeves for field joints coatings : Lotader® TX8030 - Lotryl®35BA320 - Orevac® T 9305

Side extrusion : Lotader® 3210
